Getting started...

OK,

I'm looking to get started in the bracket series at GLD. I plan to get a car together for it, do some fun runs for the remainder of this year just to get used to it and get some consistency, and then run the full 12 races next year. I may get into more heads up stuff later on, but I'll need to start here first. I've got a couple of questions about getting started; I'd just like to know all I can going in so I'm not just winging it.

1) I'll be starting in the street class with a 12.99 or slower car, so I know I don't need a full NHRA licence, but do I need a competition numer? If so, how do I go about getting one?

2) As long as I'm a club gold member and compete, I accumulate points throughout the year automatically?

3) It shows the entry as $40 for street. Saturday and Sunday are two races with two entry fees, right?

4) I think GLD used to let you stay overnight in your pit for an extra fee. Is that still done?

5) I want to start in the street class, but after the first year will probably try to move up to the Pro class. Is that a difficult switch to make, or is it just how I enter when I show up?

That's all I have for now, but I'm sure I'll have more as I go. Any help or advice everybody can send my way is very much appreciated.

Thank you!

Cramez,

The fact that you're asking questions tells me you are already on the right path. The best response I can give is to attend a bracket race at GLD, ask questions of the racers currently active, and ask for where you can get more info if you need it. Track management is always available for questions, and every series that runs at GLD ( as well as other tracks ) has lead racers or group coordinators that can answer your questions.

Enjoy your time at the track, and be safe.

Cramez,

Although I do not race the bracket series at GLD, all bracket racing is pretty much the same.

1st, you will need a number, that is a fact. The track will automatically give you a number, unless you are racing for the points series, then you will need to contact NHRA to get a perminent number. That number will stay with you until you choose not to be a member anymore. The track will issue you a number to start out with and if just starting, I would go that route.

2nd, make sure you have a safe car with no leaks, problems, or faults, then make sure you have throttle return springs, an overflow catch can, wheel studs that are long enough, safety belts that are in good shape (if stock) or current if they are 5-way harness', and good brakes. I know this seems like a broken record, but all who know can a-test to what I am saying. 1 vehicle that leaks, causes a problem, or ends up seriously hurting someone takes the fun out of racing and doesn't show respect for his/her self. At the RSD last Friday night a car that blew a radiator or head gasket on the start line took quite a long time to clean up. Water is recommended for all race vehicles, but if you cannot, make sure your system is test proven.

3rd, it is not hard to switch from a lower class to a higher class. Some regulations may apply and you might have to run a certain time or get a license if faster than a certain mph or time. Also, a roll bar or cage may be regulated also. I had my wife drive a 15 second camaro and I put a cage in it for safety.

Just remember it is to have fun, enjoy the sport and ask a lot of questions if you are unsure of what needs to be done.
